![]() In 1984, thirty years after a nuclear war, supposed to happen in the 1950s, the world is divided into three so-called superstates, constantly waging war ones against the others: Oceania, whose core territories are the Western Hemisphere, the British Isles, Australasia, and Southern Africa, Eurasia, that covers Continental Europe and Russia, as well as Siberia, and Eastasia, whose territory includes China, Japan, Korea, and Indochina. Let’s give a brief synopsis of Orwell’s novel. This is the reason why people feel like they’ve always known this intrusive character, hence the slogan « Big Brother is watching you », a maxim that endlessly brings the feeling of being watched back to the people. Although it is never said whether Big Brother exists for real or not, the latter remains omnipresent through appearing on posters or tele-screens. In the dystopian society conceived by George Orwell, an ubiquitous totalitarian state wields all powers over its therefore oppressed citizens, subject to constant surveillance. This leads many to argue that George Orwell’s novel has turned into some sort of gloomy reality. ![]() In the wake of many terrorist attacks, the global threat to national security seems to induce our governments to strengthen measures in order to reinforce the jeopardized country’s safety. If we think about Big Brother in the framework of George Orwell’s novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four, the pervasiveness of the character seems, indeed, to be its main trait. Nowadays, Big Brother is known as a synonym of mass surveillance.
